Making Winter Skin Into Wonderful Skin

Do you love winter, but hate what it does to your skin? If so, you are not alone. Many women, men and even children suffer through winter with dry, scaly skin, and chapped hands, cheeks and lips. TV and magazine ads are full of wonder creams, lotions and oils that promise to do away with winter skin, once and for all.

No matter how good the marketing is, however, these products rarely work, and even worse, they are often full of chemicals and fragrances that can cause even more irritation to winter-weathered skin. But don’t despair! There are some natural options and skin care tips that really will help nourish and moisturize your skin and keep you looking and feeling great, all winter long!

The Water Connection

The cold weather and shorter days of winter conspire to make us less active than we may be during the warmer months. This means we may not feel as thirsty as usual, resulting in a sharp decrease in the amount of water and fluids we take in.

In addition, when we are thirsty we may reach for hot beverages, such as tea and coffee that contain caffeine. Since caffeine can act like a diuretic, our bodies can more easily become dehydrated, causing our skin, eyes, nails and even our hair to feel dry and uncomfortable.

Using water correctly will help keep your body from becoming dehydrated and help keep it healthy and happy. Here are some tips to try:

  • Hot baths and showers feel good, but they rob your skin of natural oils and pave the way for dry skin problems. Combat this by lowering the temperature of the water when bathing and avoid soaking for more than a few minutes to keep natural moisture from being washed away.
  • Add extra humidity to your home or office with a portable humidifier.
  • Up your water intake.
  • Eat more brothy soups and drink more juice and herbal teas in winter to add more hydration in a delicious, healthful way.

Change Your Skin Care Routine

Once you have addressed the problem of hydration, it is time to concentrate on skin care from the outside in and coconut oil is an excellent place to begin. Organic coconut oil provides nourishment for your skin, yet absorbs quickly and leaves you skin soft, supple and glowing. Since coconut oil is solid at room temperature and becomes liquid at temperatures above 76 degrees, simply place the jar in a bowl of hot water for a few moments before using.

  • Apply coconut oil to the entire body while still moist from bathing for beautiful, comfortable skin.
  • Coconut oil absorbs quickly making it great as a facial moisturizer for both nighttime use and under makeup.
  • Rub coconut oil into chapped hands, rough elbows, knees and feet every day to improve problem areas

Coconut oil can be safely used on children of all ages to help keep them comfortable, too. Men will find that coconut oil is a great way to moisturize their skin and hands and will even help soothe the sting of shaving.
