Start with The Pantry

The easiest way to do this is first remove the contents and place them inside an insulated cooler to keep them fresh while cleaning.

Wipe down the interior with an absorbent microfiber cloth to remove spills, crumbs and foodborne illnesses, such as from raw meat and poultry juices. If the shelves are removable, place them carefully on your kitchen counter and clean them thoroughly with a vinegar and water solution to freshen and sanitize before placing them back into the fridge.

Cleaning & Caring for Your Fridge

Your refrigerator is one of the most heavily used appliances in the home, but when it comes to cleaning, it is often the most neglected. Spoiled food, spills, mold and bacteria in the fridge can put you and your family at risk for foodborne illnesses. Here are some tips for keeping your family healthy and your refrigerator sparkling.

Cleaning Techniques

To start, take everything out of the refrigerator and place the items on a nearby counter. If you prefer, you can always clean and sanitize self-by-shelf to avoid food, beverages, produce, etc. from spoiling. As you remove items, check the expiration date and dispose of anything past the “use by” date. For perishable foods, such as produce, carefully look for spoilage and discard anything that looks questionable or smells odd. As advised by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), when in doubt, throw it out. As a rule of thumb, leftovers should also be discarded after four days.

Scrub down the shelves and drawers using a microfiber cloth and DIY vinegar cleaning solution. Household vinegar has many uses; however, it is extremely effective in cleaning an array of surfaces and eliminating bacteria. Don’t forget to wipe down the refrigerator door handle; after all, it is touched frequently throughout the day.

Lastly, to keep your fridge smelling fresh, store an open box of backing soda in the back of the refrigerator. Baking soda is a cost effective and natural way to eliminate unwanted odors. Replace the box, at least, every three months. It may also help to date the box so you will remember when it’s time to swap it out.

Proper Food Storage

Now that the fridge is sparkling clean, it is important to store your food properly. Place items like juice, milk, water and similar beverages that need to be chilled on the top shelf. Cheese, eggs, deli meat and leftovers should all go on the middle shelves. Eggs and butter can also be placed on the door, but only in a compartment protected by a cover. Fruit and vegetables should be stored in a bottom drawer, which remains cool and often has humidity controls to keep produce fresher longer. Raw or defrosting meats should be placed on the lowest shelf to reduce the chance of contaminating other foods. Additionally, place foods that are likely to leak, such as berries or thawing meat, on plates or in covered containers to catch any spills and prevent the spread of bacteria. The refrigerator door is the best place for jarred items, condiments and sauces.
